I have read about the destruction of the mosque at Ayodhya and was not aware of additional religious hatred in Poona. Any sort of religious hate is so horrible and not ever religious in the traditional fundamental sense. As my India friend asks me, if there is only one true God and only one true religion, why are there so many religions? And the mob with bricks and steel pipes running after you and your friend taking off on their scooter before you can jump on the back. And $2.50 cents daily expense account as a sales rep, $2.00 for lodging. Amazing how you got through all that. The future does not look bright if too many people believe crooked politicians. One has to create their own self-knowledge and self-sufficiency and help others to create their own. Not easy at all but one has to do the best they can. Thanks for this post. It is excellent to keep in mind but not worry too much about. One must carry on the best they can in an unfriendly world where there are still good people.

Poona is largely peaceful, however

In the Sikh religion, they believe in one true God, and they do not have an image of God. The Guru Granth Sahib, the Sikhs’ holy book, has many hymns from Sufi saints. Mian Mir, another Sufi saint, laid the foundation of Harmandir Sahib (the Golden Temple). Maharaja Ranjit Singh adopted Persian as his court language. As someone told me, South Asians had a much more subtle understanding and appreciation of religion than modern-day Indians. Our technology has made us stupid. Maybe I should research this area! There is much to it. How did I survive on $2.5 a day? We learn to innovate, without being dishonest. There is more honesty in common folk than the rich, ‘educated,’ and powerful realize. There is a term we use - ‘the educated illiterate.’

I agree with you that modern technology has made us stupid and I would definitely like to read more about that. Also totally see the creativity of living on $2.50 a day and wealthy people are often ignorant of that sort of creativity. The Sikh religion is quite amazing in many ways. I am not familiar with the Sufi saints but would like to read more about them. I admire the honesty of common folk. I think the worship of technology or observable materiality detaches everyone from unseen spiritual more fulfilling aspects of life. And one best sees this detachment in the indifferent behavior of others. All the more reason to forage on in the emptiness with one's own spiritual self wisdom and acknowledge the same in others.

Sufism is the mystical form of Islam. Sufi philosophy is integral to Punjabi culture.
