This a great mini podcast on Discipline and the Discipline you worked into your life and acquired in your university higher education helped you achieve higher levels of educational achievement and this seems to be sorely missing in American universities because especially in computer science, in the higher knowledge specialties, 37% of American students go for the higher degrees. Of Indian American university students, 85% study for a master’s degree or PhD. So now, in the area of H-1B visas for these Indian students, resentment emerges. For many years for American students, it was easy to get a good well-paying job with a bachelor’s degree in computer science or even in some areas of economics. The necessary Discipline to achieve a masters or PhD didn't seem so very necessary. But in India, jobs were never easy either with or without a bachelor’s degree. Every year, 1 million university students graduate and go into competition trying to get hired for only 100,000 jobs. So in India, Discipline in absolutely required. Now with next years H-1B applications, the odds are much better for those who have masters or Ph.Ds. But the $100,000 H-1B fee that American companies have to pay to hire an Indian student looks like American huge tech companies will be financially forced to settle for under qualified bachelor’s degree Americans in the higher paid high skill computer science positions. If would have been much better if Trump had mandated that American students would need a masters or a PhD degree to get a higher skilled job so the student and the major company and particularly startups are not set up for failure both for success and for retaining leading edge innovation which Trump is trying to preserve. Today this is much more difficult because we are behind. China has achieved way technological innovation recently than America. So your discussion about Discipline is important. On a practical level, Discipline helps one achieve any goal or desired result faster than without. I had a payment issue I needed to resolve over the phone in which there was a forecasted wait time of 20 minutes. This at 2:45 in the morning. So I called in and waited and waited. If I had not activated some sort of Discipline, I would have gotten very angry. To be honest I did feel the beginning of huge anger but realized I need Discipline. I needed to be calm. Because if this was a long wait at 4:45 in the morning when most people in my time zone were asleep, how much longer would it be when many more people would wake up and phone in particularly in light of the weather being so adverse and extremely cold that most all employees on the overnight shift seemed to be calling out that they couldn't come to work. So at about 2 hours and 20 minutes from when I called in, my call was picked up and the my issue was resolved. When there is high inflation and more firing like at the Washington Post, you almost can't enough Discipline in order to survive. So this in an important topic and an important post.
Thanks a lot. In India, sadly, school discipline exists only to get marks. When I was in school, our exam papers made us think, and getting 70% was cause for celebration. Now the focus is on rote, and kids who get less than 99% want to cry. At least in school, discipline should focus on real learning and helping kids find their passion. In India, we miss this.
Kids leave India because getting into a good college is tough. Also, there are no jobs.
The 100,000 fee that Trump is imposing will be America's loss. Many countries are forging ties they might not have forged before. Even India's shitty deal with America may not be implemented: Trump won't last forever.
