Substack Half Dead: Goat Market

I walked through the goat market at Jama Masjid, Delhi.

This is a short video of my walk through the goat market at Jama Masjid in Delhi. I will make a longer YouTube video later, but this one will suffice for now.

When I make that video, I will also give a longer explanation of the tradition.

You walk. Goats rub themselves against you. Human-animal and goat-animal live alongside each other for ten days.

Men come to sell goats. Men -and sometimes women - come to buy goats. The most expensive goat I saw being sold cost over 1,200 US Dollars. The most expensive I was told about cost over 2,500 US Dollars.

Then, there is Eid. After the prayers are done, families sacrifice the goats and share the meat in a communal meal. Note: they sacrifice the goats and do not merely kill them.

The celebrations will end next year.

For the finicky Hindus amongst us, goat sacrifice does take place at the Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati, and at the Kali Temple in Calcutta.
